El Carmen Wilderness Area
Designated in 2005 as the first Latin American wilderness conservation area, El Carmen encompasses half a million acres of land in the Northeastern region of Mexico.
The spectacular Sierra Del Carmen forms a forty mile long "sky island" rising over 5,000 feet above the Chihuahuan Desert floor.
CEMEX, worldwide producer of cement, ready-mix concrete, and aggregates currently manages the land, supporting Carmen Mountain whitetail and re-introducing native species including desert bighorn sheep and elk.
